25/10/10Workshop by artist María Ruido: Los de dentro y los de fuera
As part of the Manifesta 8 exhibition in the former prison of San Antón artist Maria Ruido presents her film called "La memoria interior". The film is a documentary essay based on her personal experiences, the narration of the history of her family and micro histories of migration. During the exhibition Maria Ruido and the Manifesta 8 Education and Mediation Department will develop a special project called Outsiders and Insiders. The project focuses on the experiences, micro histories and the collective memory of the neighborhood of the former San Antón Prison. A neighborhood that to this day is strongly influenced by migration. Together with the people from the neighborhood Maria Ruido and the Manifesta 8 Art Mediators will set about creating a common archive of the San Antón quarter. And will collectively investigate the neighborhoods relation to the former prison and its possible futures.
"Using my personal experiences as put into practice in "La Memoria Interior" as a point of departure, our project aims to create in collaboration with the people from the neighborhood and the Manifesta 8 Mediators the oral and photographic archive of the Neighborhood. An archive that will contain material from each of the mayor points of influence on the development of the neighborhood and which will give the neighborhood an opportunity to collectively narrate the stories of emigration, immigration and settlement and their relation to the San Antón prison. To create an "common narrative space" by linking various social groups and by linking generations by means of photographs, private audiovisual material and the oral accounts of micro histories."In times like these in which both immigrants and less well to do social classes are being criminalized, are being accused of occupying the limited job positions available, are being accused of benefiting from our social security services and are hybridizing our cultural identity. In times like these we would like to take a moment to reflect about our own (only recently silenced) immigrant past, about the institutions which control our movement in a seemingly globalized world. Issues such as work, and it is increasingly devaluated conditions, the concept of citizenship and the notion of immigration, so often brought in connection with the employment situation, will be some of the discussion topics in an attempt to understand our own current and past conditions and the conditions of all those who have come and those who still will come to the state of Spain" by Maria Ruido.
The project will consist of two main parts:
1: A series of viewings of audiovisual documents (films, audiovisual material from the artist, television material) and subsequent discussion sessions.
2: A series of weekly neighborhood meetings during which the archive will be collected and constructed.
