"The spatial installation Suspended radically condenses available information as a visual representation of fundamental elements and concepts. These help to form our notion of the structure of the world. It is presented as a three-dimensional, navigable and dense visual database. Original material from which patterns were generated from constructed or representational images found on the Internet. 1960, Kufstein, Austria. Lives and works in Kufstein. Nikolaus Schletterer's artistic practice is an inquiry about the true, intrinsic value of today's production of imagery. His main interest is focused on the essence of the photographic image, primarily its indexical nature, or how the perception of signs and references in a photograph will vary from viewer to viewer. He is also interested in the semiotic connotations of depiction, abstraction and immateriality. The artist's subjects of research become the discreet frameworks which constitute the foundations of our visual cognition in this era of media intensity. Nikolaus Schletterer assembles his photographic and video works mainly in the formats of spatial installations or bound together as books. His work has been seen at the Kunstraum Innsbruck in his native Tirol and at solos at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest (2006) and the Krethlow in Bern (2001).
