RURAL
TOURISM
THERE IS NO
NEED TO GO FAR!
HOME > WHAT TO DO > SPECIAL RURAL TOURISM
Hello friends!

Today we're going to remember some of the most important lessons of Sesame Street. Here you can find a remake for travellers that will let you come back to the old times.

Today's first lesson is the difference between NEAR AND FAR:
Breathing fresh air in the mountains...NEAR
Getting lost in charming villages... NEAR
Doing sport in the middle of nature... NEAR
Running away to a cottage... NEAR
Enjoying the best wines... NEAR
The Region of Murcia offers hundreds of activities and accommodations to enjoy rural tourism. Nature lovers, goblin hunters and conquerors of charming villages... The Region is yours!

ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE...

You'll have to continue counting if you want to get to know all our charming villages. Cehegín has one of the most beautiful old quarters; Moratalla has a six-tower castle and an enchanted maze of paved narrow streets. In Bullas, of modernist style and with lovely settings, such as the Salto del Usero, you'll get a good dip with waterfall included.

In Caravaca de la Cruz, Holy City, there is a unique collection of churches, monasteries, chapels and a great secret: the natural landscape of Fuentes del Marqués. If you want to know what characterizes the rest of our most valued villages, as Lorca, Blanca, Mula or Aledo, you'll have to come here to discover it. Although in every stop, you'll be bound to find singular museums, monuments, street markets, panoramic terraces and many treasures of the typical cuisine.

LEARNING THE COLOURS

Red, white, rosé! Why looking for outside when you have them at home? Thanks to our climate and to the richness of our lands, some of the best wines are here produced. Practice the art of good living participating in the activities offered by the wine tours of Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla. The possibilities are beyond your imagination, with wine tastings and visits to the wine cellars, culture immersions, outings to natural landscapes and vineyard fields, shows and discounts in restaurants and accommodation.

AROUND AND ACROSS

And following with Sesame Street, say goodbye to sedentary customs and start moving. Inland there are paths and routes to get to know the Region as it should be...on foot, but also by bike or on horseback. For example, the Vía Verde del Noroeste, a natural route going by the old train route that connected the locality of Murcia with Caravaca de la Cruz. And, if what you want is a spiritual walk, we recommend you the Camino de la Vera Cruz, an ancient pilgrimage route that connects the local shrine Santuario de la Vera Cruz in Murcia with the Way of Saint James. For getting in touch with the huerta of Murcia, there is nothing better than the Valle de Ricote, considered to be the last Moorish's stronghold in Spain. And for mountaineers and friends of trees, we have customised challenges in Sierra Espuña, Sierra del Carche, Sierra de la Pila and Moratalla, where they can find the highest peak of the Region, the mountain rage of Revolcadores.

UP AND DOWN

Have you ever lived the experience of being gulped by the Earth? In the Region of Murcia there are many caves you can visit and the Cueva del Puerto in Calasparra is one of the biggest ones. The area is set up for both caving and tourist visits, with a tour of 300 lighted metres livened up with music.

If you prefer heights to stalactites and stalagmites, is time to doing paragliding without engine noises and over multicoloured fields. Or maybe is time to putting on your climbing shoes and climbing one of the hundred routes of the Barranco Leyva... For all level climbers.

IS IT A BIRD, IS IT A PLANE?

No, it's a canyon! The Cañón de Almadenes, properly speaking. Shaped by the Segura River for millions of years, this canyon has walls that reach a height of 120 metres. One of the best ways to enjoy it is visiting the Cueva de la Serreta, a cave with a stunning aerial balcony and cave paintings that were declared as a World Heritage site. Almadenes and the Valle de Ricote are perfect places to practice hiking and rafting, both in calm stretches and in fast ones.

BERT, I AM HUNGRY

Have you tasted our gazpachos (cold vegetable soups)? And our gachasmigas, (breadcrumbs with water, olive oil and salt)? Other recipes to be accompanied with a good wine are our rice, with rabbit and snails or vegetables and turkey; our vegetable stews, such as olla gitana; our casseroles and our roast. Regarding dessert, each locality has its typical one, but among the most populars you can find: pan de calatrava (crème caramel and bread), almojábenas (sweets made of flour, sugar, eggs and oil), tocino de cielo (caramelised egg yolk and sugar) and pears with red wine.

GOODNIGHT ELMO!

Rest like a king in one of our rural lodgings and, in the morning, awake with the sound of birds, the smell of firewood and freshly-baked bread, surrounded by nature. In the Region, you'll find houses based in different concepts, although all of them will make your stay as cozy as possible. Thanks to them, you'll have a perfect base to go exploring and a magnificent excuse to live some days isolated, always respecting the principles of sustainable tourism.
