CHURCH OF SANTO DOMINGO
Information

It was originally the church of the Convent of San Isidoro dela Order of Santo Domingo. After the confiscation of Mendizábal (1835) the convent disappeared, leaving only the church, which was sold to the Navy for military use, and that is why the image of its patron saint, the Virgen del Carmen, is located on its main altar.

Inside, the chapel of the Marrajos, as the members of the oldest brotherhood of our Holy Week, that of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, are popularly known, which is the jewel of the Baroque style in our city. The original chapel of the Brotherhood was erected in 1642 in what was then the church of the old Dominican convent of San Isidoro.  In 1732 it was enlarged and provided with its current altarpiece.

It is a square space covered with an airy dome profusely decorated with the emblems of the Passion.
Baroque theatrical devices are used here to create the levitating effect of the dome and to make the gilded altarpiece shine by means of directed natural light. The altarpiece summarises the essential content of the Good Friday processions: in the large central exedra, the niches on either side of the altarpiece house the image of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene, a sculpture of great interest, the work of José Capuz, with niches for the rest of the images of the protagonists of the Calle de la Amargura. The narration of the Passion is completed in the upper part with the paintings that, among rock carvings, represent the Crucifixion, the Calvary and the Descent from the Cross.
