PARISH CHURCH OF SAN FRANCISCO JAVIER

The church of San Francisco Javier, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuies, boasts an itnterior rich in artistic elements, including sculptures (mostly carved, gilded, and polychromed wood), altarpieces, and liturgical furnishings.

It has Latin cross plan with a structure consisting of barrel vaults supported by load-bearing walls in the enclosures and pilasters in the central openings.

Notable features include the dome over the transept with eight equal-sided segments, the dome at the apse, the bell tower, and the baroque altarpiece by Antonio Carrión Valverde.

The pulpit, adjoined to a column, is another standout element, crafted from carved wood. It consits of an octogonal body and a canopy. The fronts are adorned with carvings of the four evangelists and the image of Jesus.

The Parish Museum houses ancient liturgical objects and the relic of San Francisco Javier. Its last restoration dates back to the 2007.

PLAZA DE ESPAÑA

Plaza de España is the bustling commecial and cultural heart of San Javier. In 2003, an ambitious project was innaugurated to merge two former squares into one, flanked by the Town Hall and the Church of San Fancisco Javier, along with numerous commercial establishments that bring life to the square. The town hall building serves as the hub of the community's activities, as San Javier acts as the administrative center of the entire region, housing courts, the property registry, social security offices, the employment service, as well as banks, notaries, and other businesses catering to residents and visitors. On the surface, you can enjoy the open-air terraces, which are open year-round, and there is an underground parking facility that facilitates parking in the city center.

The spacious square also hosts numerous cultural and festive events throughout the year. The most significant event is the installation of the Spanish Nativity Scene every Christmas, covering an area of 1,600m2.

The small Andrés Baquero street connects to Plaza Maestre, another large open space with children's playgrounds, allowing us to admire the beautiful restorarion of the rear part of the church.
